What Makes Half-Round Gutters a Great Choice for Homeowners?

Gutters are available in two profiles: the angular “ogee” or K-style gutters and the curved half-round gutters. In today’s post, local gutter and siding contractor Shine Construction Inc. takes a look at half-round gutters and what makes them a great option for your home.

Why Choose Half-Round Gutters?

The most immediate difference between K-style and half-round gutters is their profile. While K-style gutters feature an angular and more elaborate profile — it looks like crown molding when viewed from the ground — half-round gutters present a more graceful appearance. Its U-shaped profile features a curved look that can be used to “soften” angular parts of the roof. Half-round gutters have been in use far longer than K-style gutters and are typically found on traditional style homes, making them ideal for renovation projects that require an authentic look.

While modern gutters are built using extruded sheet metal, either in 10-foot sections or as seamless lengths cut on-site, traditional half-round gutters offer another option: cast iron segments. While they can be costly and not offered by all gutter contractors, cast-iron gutters are durable and are less vulnerable to impact damage.

Things to Consider Before Choosing Half-Round Gutters

Make no mistake, half-round gutters are a great option and are in no way inferior to K-style gutters. However, there are a few things you should consider before choosing it for your home. One is that it is not offered by all gutter contractors, so you will need to ask a prospective contractor and make sure they’re offering it before hiring them.

There is also the matter of capacity. Half-round gutters have an inherently lower capacity compared to K-style gutters of the same size. This means if you are switching to half-round gutters, your gutter contractor will choose bigger gutter troughs to match the K-style’s capacity. The increase in material can drive the overall cost a bit higher.
