The Benefits of Full Roof Replacement Over a Roof-Over

Asphalt shingles are popular roofing materials that offer excellent protection and weather resistance at a decent price. But like any other roofing system, they still need regular care and maintenance to ensure they perform as expected. But even if a roofing system is professionally cared for and maintained, this only extends its expected lifespan. Eventually, the repairs will get more frequent until it won’t be worth it anymore, and when that happens, you’ll need to consider a full roof replacement.

However, if you’re planning to get a simple roof-over for your roof just to save money, local roofing and siding contractor Shine Construction Inc. is here to tell you that it isn’t worth the cost.

Why It Isn’t Cost-Effective

When you install a new layer of roofing over your old one, it won’t last as long as a full roof replacement. If your current shingles are visibly curled, loose, or in bad condition, installing new shingles over them won’t fully address the internal damage and instead make it harder to repair later on. The warranty that comes with your new shingles will also require stripping the old roofing material before installation, so if you choose to nail new shingles over your old ones, it becomes void.

Full Roof Replacements Are Better in the Long Run

As trusted contractors in roofing and window replacement, we don’t recommend roof-overs simply because they don’t last as long as a full roof replacement. Compared to normal installations, they absorb much more heat so they tend to deteriorate faster. And since the old layer is still intact, it can add more strain to your inner roofing structure. The added weight to your roof can become too much for the rest of your system as it runs the risk of collapsing at any time.

On the other hand, a full roof installation involves tearing off all the old roofing material and installing brand new material. It’s more expensive upfront, but you get better and longer-lasting protection compared to a roof-over. Each layer of old roofing is tossed and replaced with new materials, including new shingles, a new layer of underlayment, and even an ice/water shield.
