The Various Risks That Come With Doing Winter Roofing Work

An immediate replacement is necessary when the roof is already showing signs of aging and deterioration. Ideally, it is best scheduled when the weather conditions are mild. After all, doing any type of roofing work in the middle of winter has its risks. Local roofing and siding contractor Shine Construction Inc. discusses them below.

Safety Risks

We all know the hazards many roofers face whenever they do their job. There’s the matter of getting up and down the ladder and the dangers of working at a height. Hazards, however, add up come wintertime. Freezing temperatures make roofing work quite taxing for the pros, which may increase their chances of making mistakes during installations or repairs. They also have to wear fall protection gear and anti-slip boots to navigate the slippery roof.

Compromised Roofing Material

With safety precautions in place, home improvement contractors can complete roof and siding replacement projects. Still, there’s a huge chance the new material may not be installed properly due to exposure to extreme temperatures. Asphalt shingles, for instance, lose their flexibility and resistance when outdoor temperatures drop to below freezing levels. Such conditions make these roofing materials brittle, causing nails to be overdriven.

Slower Roofing Process

The additional hazards roofers have to face when working on a roof replacement project in the winter can slow the whole process down. Apart from having to work carefully, they may have to deal with malfunctioning nail guns, compressors and other equipment that have been exposed to cold temperatures. The reduced speed of the roofing work means that your roof may take longer to be installed completely.

Given all these risks, it would make more sense to wait until the temperature reaches above freezing before scheduling your roof replacement. In doing so, you can rest assured that your roofing contractor will not encounter any issues that might hinder the progress of the project.
